Ron English and his POPaganda Universe

Ron English is one of the most well-known contemporary artists, often referred to as ‘The Godfather of Street Art’. Born in Decatur, Illinois, and moved to New York after receiving his bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas, English worked as an apprentice for various artists, starting to sell his own works.

Throughout his career he has worked within the field of street art, fine art and art toy design.

He is famous for his Culture Jamming where he modifies advertising billboards. However his works used to have a very political message, as we can see in paintings as the famous version from Picasso’s Guernica.

Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books and television with characters that seem to come from space or during a “trip”. Sexy figures, psychedelic colours and terrific smiles are part of his world.

Ron English Popaganda Kaneda Toys

Ron English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature fusion of lowbrow expressions with fine art techniques. A complete mash-up of high and low cultural touches from superheroes to art history icons, mixed with pop art style.

Ron English famous figures

Grin Faces

Super Mario, The Simpsons, Charlie Brown, Looney Toons characters and even Street Fighter characters have something in common. Not only to be pop icons that everybody knows but to have a special signature treatment by Ron English. If you look for a special mark of English on his figures, you can see many of them with a particular skully grin. The artist applies it even on Smileys or Maneki Nekos.

Cereals Killers

The supersize versions of the cereal mascots is another way of English to criticise consumerism and to play with brand icons.

Dunny & Bearbrick

English has been embodied on some of the most famous platforms too.
His Apocalypse Dunny 8” is one of the collector grails and you can get it on Kaneda Toys!
The Series 2 Dunny 3” is another one searched for fans of the artist.

Medicom Toy unveiled a set of 100% & 400% Bearbricks at the San Diego Comic Convention in 2007. The pack included special boxes featuring Ron English artwork as well.

Ron English has no fear about being an artist and an icon for many people around the world.  His art is very visible in the contemporary and modern art scene and you can be very lucky to own one or some of his pieces.
